Thyristors and TRIACs: Phase Control, Soft Starting and Snubber Network Limits
In AC voltage control and motor soft starting, a fully controllable device is not always the best answer because load current commutates to zero every half cycle and only turn-on capability is needed. This article covers the latching mechanism of thyristors and TRIACs, the power relationship in phase control, the dual stress of voltage and current rate of rise, and the design essentials of snubber networks and high-speed fusing.
